BorgWarner to Supply New Aluminum-Wire eMotor to Major Chinese OEM

First market introduction of BorgWarner's aluminum-wire hairpin eMotor, for hybrid generator motors and auxiliary-drive traction motors, cuts wire weight by more than 60% and cost by more than 80% versus comparable copper. Production starts Q4 2026.

AUBURN HILLS, MICHIGAN — AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Oct. 29, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- BorgWarner has secured its first business award for its new aluminum-wire eMotor technology from a major Chinese original equipment manufacturer (OEM), marking the technology's first introduction to the market. The product features aluminum-wire hairpin winding technology and will be used in hybrid vehicles across multiple applications, including generator motors and traction motors for auxiliary drive applications. Start of production is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026.

BorgWarner has collaborated with this customer across multiple product areas for more than 15 years. This latest award expands the partnership into a new application by incorporating aluminum conductors and hairpin winding technology into BorgWarner's hybrid product portfolio.

"We are proud to introduce BorgWarner's aluminum-wire eMotor technology to the market through this program and to further strengthen our long-standing relationship with the customer," said Isabelle McKenzie, Vice President of BorgWarner Inc. and President and General Manager, PowerDrive Systems. "The technology combines aluminum conductors with BorgWarner's hairpin winding expertise to deliver significant weight and cost benefits. Supported by our comprehensive local product engineering and manufacturing capabilities, we have optimized the motor design, manufacturing processes and connection technologies to meet the requirements of hybrid generator and auxiliary drive applications."

The award demonstrates BorgWarner's continued innovation in electric motor technology. Compared with a conventional copper-wire motor of comparable specifications, the aluminum-wire solution maintains peak torque and peak power while reducing weight by more than 60% and reducing costs by more than 80%. Aluminum-wire technology is also well suited for generator motors in hybrid applications and traction motors used for auxiliary drive applications, giving customers greater flexibility in developing various hybrid architectures.
