CATL Unveils Dual-Electric Range Extension Battery to Accelerate Electric Heavy-Duty Truck Adoption

BEIJING — CATL has unveiled a dual-electric range extension battery for heavy-duty trucks, paired with the latest generation of its QIJI heavy-duty battery-swapping system. The setup combines a standardized chassis-mounted swappable main battery with a behind-the-cab range-extension battery, currently 77 kWh with 3C charging, that provides backup power.
CATL says the backup battery lets drivers use more of the main battery before a swap, raising depth of discharge from about 70 percent to over 95 percent, with power switching to the range-extension battery in milliseconds when the main pack runs low. QIJI also introduced standardized 260# (432 kWh) and 300# (513 kWh) swap blocks, five-minute swaps, flexible battery leasing, and plans for 900 swapping stations by the end of 2026 and 2,000 by 2027.
The company also introduced a new lineup of heavy-duty truck batteries for different configurations, and said agreements for 13,000 units were signed at the launch event. (summary body)
