Fuel Cost Relief Measures Create New Questions for Truckers, Farmers and Equipment Owners
WASHINGTON, DC — The Engine Technology Forum warned that temporary federal and state diesel fuel cost relief measures raise compatibility questions for truckers, farmers and equipment owners. It notes ultra-low sulfur diesel at 15 ppm remains the required fuel for modern engines with advanced emissions controls, while temporary measures allow red-dyed nonroad diesel in highway vehicles and waivers in Texas (up to 500 ppm in 110 counties) and Alaska (up to 5,000 ppm until October 24, 2026). Using higher-sulfur fuel in engines requiring ULSD can damage particulate filters and catalysts and create maintenance, warranty and compliance problems, so users should confirm fuel compatibility with their manufacturer or dealer.
