Sensata Technologies Announces Brake Force Sensors Enabling Next-Generation Electromechanical Braking Systems in Production EVs

Caliper-mounted sensors measure clamping force directly for closed-loop brake-by-wire control

SWINDON, UNITED KINGDOM — Sensata Technologies says its brake force sensors are now working inside production electromechanical braking systems on leading electric vehicles, a step in the move away from hydraulic braking toward fully electric brake-by-wire setups. Because electromechanical brakes actuate electrically instead of hydraulically, they depend on an accurate, continuous reading of braking force to stay safe and consistent.

The sensor mounts inside the caliper and measures clamping force directly, feeding high-frequency data to the control unit so each wheel can be managed as an independent closed-loop system. Sensata says the design grows out of its Micro Strain Gauge technology, which it has used in safety-critical braking applications for more than 25 years, and is aimed at electrified, software-defined vehicles with advanced driver assistance.
